Mt. Longonot, situated barely 60km from the Nairobi the capital of Kenya, is a suitable day hiking destination. It is a fascinating inactive volcano overlooking lake Naivasha and rises 2700m above sea level and 750m above the nearby landscape. The entire mountain is conserved as a game reserve by the Kenya Wildlife Service. It is a habitat for many wild animals, most of which reside in the thick forest covering the crater floor. Chances of spotting the wildlife are rare.
Our driver/tour guide will pick you up at 600 hrs from your Nairobi hotel and we head out of the city toward the Great Rift Valley. We drive through the kikuyu highlands where we are likely to see tea plantations before we get to the view of the eastern cliff of the valley. There are several stop-overs along the way, where we can stop and have a spectacular view of the Great Rift Valley floor and the escarpment. The valley which was formed about 5 million years ago stretches through Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia as it inches its way to the red sea.
We will then head to Lake Naivasha where we will have a picnic lunch and enjoy boat riding at Fisherman’s camp along the lake. The trip ends at about 600 hrs with a drop off at your Nairobi hotel or a place of your choice within Nairobi city.
Hiking takes about 2 hrs from Gate park to the top of the crater and descend and about 4 hrs round the crater where you will have a magnificent view of the underlying valley.
