Elementaita
Elementaita emanates from a Maasai name ‘Muteita’ which is synonymous with ‘dust place’. This is due to dustiness and the dryness of the area.
Situated about 100 km from Nairobi and 1670m above sea level, the shallow Lake Elementaita lies in the area. The lake is sandwiched between the fresh water Lake Naivasha and the alkaline Lake Nakuru, home to thousands of flamingoes.
Gilgil town is a short distance away from Elementaita.
Activities
To the southern end of the Lake are “Kikopey” Hotsprings where there is relatively hot water. A dip into the water soothes and relaxes the body. The way to the Hotsprings is through a rough road that leads to the Hotsprings. At the ‘Hotsprings’ you will find children and adults enjoying a ‘hot’ swim in the Lake.
Sleeping Warrior and Ugali Hills trekking is another activity that you may include in your bucket list ( a full day’s activity and requires prior planning).
Acccommodation
Several Lodges and Campsites have been set up along the Lake Elementaita and it’s environs to provide accommodation to guests visiting the area.
Kariandusi Museum also lies about 2 km to the East Side of Lake Elementaita.
