1 Day Mount Kenya Hike
Mt. Kenya is the country’s highest mountain and rises abruptly from the Central Highlands to a summit of 5199m (17,058 ft). It is also the second highest mountain in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro. The mountain has three peaks, Batian, which is the highest, Nelion and Lenana. Batian and Nelion have been summited and they are for technical climbers. Lenana. The highest peak that can be ascended without rock climbing is point Lenana at 4985m (16,355 ft). Batian 5199m, Nelion 5188m can only be ascended by technical climbers.
This 1 day hike however, is for those people with limited time, but with little time to see the countryside and hike Mount Kenya with no intention of reaching the highest peaks.
Tour Details
The trip begins with a pick up from your hotel at 0700 hours, through the Thika Superhighway, towards the slopes as you enjoy the gradual ascent to the slopes of Mount Kenya, arriving at the park entrance at 0930 hours.
The drive will take you to the park entrance through the Sirimon Route. Sirimon is the gentlest slope of all approach routes and it is therefore the best for starters.
The hike starts at the park entrance at 1000 hours through the forest with distinctive vegetation zones, up to the Old Moses Point, at 3000m, which takes about 3 hours.
Enjoy a picnic lunch at the Old Moses point. This point offers you an opportunity to view some animals including the gravy zebras and a variety of birdlife, as you take photos.
You can start your descent to the park entrance where you meet your driver to Nairobi to arrive at your Nairobi hotel between 1900 hours and 1930 hours.
