Tsavo National Park is Kenya’s largest National Park and the fifth largest in the whole of Africa. It is an expansive wilderness, in addition to recently formed volcanic hills and traversed by two life-giving rivers. It covers an area of 20,810 km2, (8036 sq miles). Due to it’s expansiveness, the park has been split into two, for administrative purposes, Tsavo East and Tsavo West, divided by the main road from Nairobi to Mombasa. In the early eighties, Chyulu Hills was declared part of the park. The park is visited by about 240,000 people annually. Tsavo East is more arid, and only the region south of Galana River is open to tourists, hence the reason why we are concentrating on Tsavo West in this tour. In Tsavo West, numerous tracks, well sign-posted, crisscross the park making it easy to view the animals especially the areas surrounding the various water holes where they are normally concentrated. Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary (within the park), protects the Tsavo’s 40 black rhinos. Mzima Springs are the park’s major attraction, which are within easy reach of Kitani Safari Camp and Kilanguni Lodge. The pools of this clear water flow from the Chyulu Hills. The pure water has created an oasis surrounded by palm and fever-tree which is inhabited by hippo, crocodile and waterbirds. Tsavo is a habitat to a rich diversity of wildlife that include the lesser kudu, lion, cheetah, Masai giraffe, oryx and buffalo.
