Sagana town is a small town on the Nairobi-Nyeri highway. The town is located about 100 km north of Nairobi, in Kirinya County, central Kenya. It traces its origin to the 1920s when the first railway station was built in the town. The train was used to transport farm produce to Nairobi. After the extinction of the railway line, the town was almost deserted. Years later, investors started putting up campsites, cottages and lodges that saw movements of tourists and locals to the area. Sagana town derives its name from Sagana or ‘Thagana’ River whose water is used for farming and irrigation by the locals. Several lodges and camping sites have come up along the riverline creating many water sports activities e.g. bungee jumping.
Sagana town is approximately 2 hours away from Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya. You approach it by driving through the Nairobi-Thika superhighway and onto Nyeri-Nairobi highway. The town rests at the southern end of Mount Kenya in Kirinyaga County.
River Sagana has inspired economic activities, tourism and a horde of travellers to the small town. Camping sites and lodges have been built on the riverline hence promoting water sport activities. The town is a strategic stop-over for travellers to Nyeri and Embu since it is at the intersection of Nyeri-Nairobi and Embu-Meru Highways. A mall at the intersection hosts Magunandu Supermarket where travellers and visitors to the town do their shopping.
The town has experienced tremendous growth in the recent years. From tourism activities due to establishment of cottages, camps and lodges along the riverline. The economy of the small town has had an upward movement owing to the agricultural activities in the neighbouring Kaggio town. Sagana has seen a significant rise in land and rent prices as a result of those activities.
